Market Offers ₹1.22L Cr G-Secs for RBI OMO Auction
Market participants wanted to sell a lot of government bonds, called G-Secs, to the RBI.
They offered to sell ₹1.22 lakh crore worth of these bonds, but the RBI had only planned to buy ₹50,000 crore worth.
This is because there isn't much extra money in the banking system right now.
The RBI bought some of these bonds to put more money into the banks.
They also plan to do a big money swap with dollars in the future.
All of this is to help banks have enough money to lend to people and businesses.
Market participants offered to sell G-Secs worth ₹1,22,525 crore to the RBI at an OMO auction, against the notified amount of ₹50,000 crore.
The RBI bought seven G-Secs maturing between 2029 and 2053, injecting the notified amount into the banking system.
As of January 11, 2026, surplus liquidity in the banking system was ₹29,872 crore, much lower than the ideal ₹1.5-2 lakh crore.
The auction is part of the RBI's liquidity injection measures totaling ₹2 lakh crore via four tranches of OMO purchases.
The RBI will conduct a USD/INR Buy/Sell Swap auction of $10 billion for a tenor of 3 years on January 13, 2026.
