Kashmir Court Orders Attachment of US Lobbyist's Property
A court in Kashmir has ordered the government to take control of some land owned by Ghulam Nabi Fai, a man who lives in the United States.
Fai is known for supporting groups that want Kashmir to separate from India.
The court made this decision because Fai didn't show up when asked to by the police.
He was also arrested in the US in 2011 for working as a secret agent for Pakistan and hiding money he received from them.
The land that will be taken is in two villages in Kashmir where Fai used to live.
A special NIA court in Budgam ordered the attachment of 1.5 kanals of land belonging to US-based Kashmiri lobbyist Ghulam Nabi Fai.
Fai was declared a proclaimed absconder under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) for failing to appear before authorities.
The court directed the District Collector of Budgam to take immediate possession of the land in Wadwan and Chattabugh villages.
Fai, a US citizen, founded the Kashmir American Council and was previously convicted in the US for acting as an unregistered foreign agent for Pakistan.
The attachment order comes after Fai's relatives, currently in possession of the land, were suspected of potentially selling it to evade legal action.
