Edible Oil Companies Notified for Non-Compliance
The government has sent notices to big edible oil companies for not sharing important monthly information about their production and stocks.
This information is required by law to help the government keep track of how much edible oil is available in the country.
The government wants to make sure that all companies follow the rules to avoid shortages and keep prices fair.
They have also been checking companies in different parts of India to make sure everyone is following the rules.
India imports a lot of its edible oil, so it's important for the government to have this information to plan better.
The Department of Food and Public Distribution (DFID) has issued show cause notices to large edible oil companies for not submitting mandatory monthly production data under the VOPPA Order, 2025.
Non-compliance with the VOPPA Order is a violation of the Essential Commodities Act, 1955.
The food ministry amended the VOPPA Order in 2011 to mandate monthly registration and stock declaration by edible oil units.
The government is conducting nationwide inspections to verify compliance and ensure transparency in the edible oil sector.
India imports over 57% of its annual edible oil consumption, with import values reaching Rs 1.61 lakh crore in 2024-25.
