Chandigarh Declared Slum-Free After Demolition of Shahpur Colony
Chandigarh has become the first city in India without any slums!
This happened after the last slum, Shahpur Colony, was torn down.
The city used a plan that involved tearing down old, unsafe homes and helping the people who lived there find new, better places to live.
This plan included giving them new apartments.
Over time, Chandigarh has gotten rid of 18 slums, making the city better and using the land for other things.
The government has also reclaimed a lot of land.
Chandigarh is now a good example for other cities.
Chandigarh has been declared India's first slum-free city.
Shahpur Colony, the last slum, was demolished on September 30.
The demolished colony occupied 4-4.5 acres of land.
Families were rehabilitated under the Chandigarh Small Flats Scheme, 2006.
Chandigarh has reclaimed approximately 520 acres of government land.
