Canada Announces Tariffs on US Goods as Trade War Escalates

Canada is putting new taxes, called tariffs, on many goods from the United States.

The tariffs could be as high as 50% and cover about $20 billion in products.

They include everyday items such as cheese, clothing and toilet paper.

Canada says it is responding to tariffs already placed on Canadian goods by the Trump administration.

The new Canadian tariffs will not begin until September 8.

This delay gives Canada and the United States more time to negotiate.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford said he could restrict electricity and critical mineral shipments to the United States.

President Donald Trump also threatened more tariffs on Canadian cars, making the disagreement more serious.
