US Invests $50 Million in Vulcan Elements for Rare Earth Magnet Production
Imagine special rocks called rare earths are needed to make very strong magnets.
These magnets are important for things like fighter jets and wind turbines.
For a long time, one country, China, has been the main producer of these magnets and has sometimes put limits on selling them.
Now, the U.S. government is giving a lot of money to American companies to help them make these magnets in the United States.
One company, Vulcan Elements, is getting money to build a big factory, and another company, ReElement Technologies, is getting money to help recycle and process these rare earth materials.
This is part of a plan to make sure the U.S. has its own supply of these important materials, so it doesn't have to depend so much on other countries.
The U.S. Commerce Department and Pentagon are providing substantial funding to Vulcan Elements and ReElement Technologies to boost domestic rare-earth magnet production and processing.
Vulcan Elements will receive $50 million from the CHIPS Act, a $620 million direct loan from the Pentagon, and $550 million in private funding to build a magnet production facility.
ReElement Technologies is set to receive an $80 million direct loan from the Pentagon and $80 million in private investment for recycling and processing capabilities.
This initiative aims to establish a U.S.-based rare-earth supply chain, reduce dependence on China, and secure materials vital for defense and other industries.
The funding follows reports of China imposing export controls on rare earth minerals and the Pentagon's confirmation that loans are sourced from the One Big Beautiful Bill Act.

Rare Earth Export Controls
US Government Actions
The US is ramping up its domestic production of rare earth magnets due to concerns over China's global dominance and previous imposition of controls on rare earth mineral exports.
China's Stance
China had imposed new controls on rare earth mineral exports but agreed to suspend their implementation following a meeting between leaders.
