CJI Advocates for Tech in Justice
The Chief Justice of India, Surya Kant, spoke at a big meeting about how to make the justice system better for regular people.
He said that technology is helpful, especially during the COVID pandemic, but it should not replace human decisions.
He also talked about how long court cases take and how expensive they are, which makes it hard for people to get justice.
He suggested that using mediation, where people talk and try to solve problems outside of court, could help a lot.
He also said that the government and lawyers need to work together to make this happen.
He reminded everyone that some old systems, like Lok Adalat, are already working well and should not be forgotten.
Chief Justice of India Surya Kant emphasized that technology should amplify, not replace, human judgment in the justice system.
He highlighted the high cost and excessive time taken in litigation as major barriers to justice for common citizens.
Kant proposed Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), especially mediation, as a potential solution to clear backlogs in the judicial system.
He stressed the need for a cultural commitment to mediation and suggested that government departments should avoid filing unnecessary appeals.
The CJI also cautioned against overlooking existing, effective systems like Lok Adalat while pursuing new solutions.
