Bulgarian Government Resigns Amid Mass Protests
Lots of people in Bulgaria are protesting because they want the government to step down.
They say the government isn't doing enough to stop corruption and fix the country's problems.
The protests are happening in the capital, Sofia, and other cities.
The government has to vote on whether to stay in power, and they recently took back a plan to change taxes because of the protests.
The prime minister said he heard the people and resigned.
Some people think the protests will make the government leave, but others say the government won't quit before Bulgaria starts using the euro currency next year.
Bulgarian Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov and his government resigned on Thursday amid massive anti-corruption protests.
Protesters, numbering between 50,000 and 100,000, filled Sofia’s central Triangle of Power and Independence Square demanding the government's resignation.
The government had already withdrawn a controversial 2026 budget plan due to mass protests against tax hikes and social security increases.
Protesters accused the government of widespread corruption and called for the removal of influential figures like oligarch Delyan Peevski and ex-prime minister Boyko Borissov.
Bulgaria is set to join the eurozone on January 1, 2025, despite the political turmoil.
