Malaysia Weighs AirAsia Contingency Plans Amid Financial Strains

Malaysia is checking what might happen if AirAsia has trouble continuing its normal operations.

Officials asked Malaysia Airlines and Batik Air whether they could carry more passengers and fly more domestic routes.

The airlines said they would prefer to grow gradually rather than buy all of AirAsia’s business.

They said taking over many routes would be easier if they could also use AirAsia’s leased airplanes.

AirAsia has faced higher fuel costs and reported a large loss in the second quarter.

It is trying to raise money and renegotiate some of its costs.

The company says its planned financing should meet its needs.

AirAsia also says it expects strong demand and is focused on keeping flights running.

The government has not announced that AirAsia will be taken over or rescued.
