India's Nuclear Reactor Costs Surge 55% Amid Ukraine War
India is building big nuclear power plants to make clean electricity.
Four of these plants in Tamil Nadu are costing a lot more than expected.
The cost went up from about 89,000 crore rupees to 138,000 crore rupees, a 55% jump.
This happened because the war in Ukraine made it hard to get parts and raised prices.
The government says the plants will still finish by 2027‑28 and 2029‑30, but the extra money will be needed to keep the projects on track.
Four Russian‑designed reactors at Kudankulam now cost Rs 138,330 crore, up 55% from Rs 89,470 crore.
Unit 3 and 4 costs rose 72.9%, Units 5 and 6 rose 39.9% over sanctioned amounts.
Construction of Units 3 & 4 expected to finish by June 2027/28; Units 5 & 6 by June 2029/March 2030.
Other Indian nuclear projects (Kaiga, Gorakhpur, Rawatbhata) also face cost revisions and delays.
The surge reflects supply‑chain disruptions and inflation linked to the Russia‑Ukraine conflict.
