Mizoram District Councils Report ₹159.59 Crore Salary Shortfall
Three local councils in Mizoram say they do not have enough money to pay all their staff.
Together, they say they are short by ₹159.59 crore.
The Mara council says its shortage is ₹25.88 crore, the Lai council’s is ₹69.93 crore, and the Chakma council’s is ₹63.78 crore.
Council leaders say pay increases and other employee costs have made their budgets harder to manage.
They say most of their money now goes toward salaries.
That leaves less money for development work and other needs.
The leaders have asked the state government to help provide the funds they need.
The Mara, Lai and Chakma Autonomous District Councils reported a combined salary shortfall of ₹159.59 crore.
Their respective shortfalls were ₹25.88 crore, ₹69.93 crore and ₹63.78 crore, according to Mara council leader M. Laikaw.
The councils say successive pay revisions, dearness allowance, annual increments, promotions and employee regularisation have increased financial pressure.
More than 90% of the councils’ budgets now goes to salaries, leaving little for development and other non-salary spending, the leaders said.
The council leaders appealed to the state government for intervention and requested salary funding through Revised Estimates.
