Trump’s Greenland Security Deal Expands U.S. Arctic Military Reach

The United States says it made a security agreement involving Greenland and Denmark.

President Donald Trump says the agreement would give America lasting control over Greenland’s defense.

It would also stop China and Russia from building bases or making certain sensitive investments there without permission.

Greenland is important because it lies between North America and the Arctic.

Its location can help watch for missiles traveling between Russia and the United States.

Greenland also has rare earth minerals used in technology and military equipment.

The United States already has one military base there and wants to build three more.

Denmark and Greenland rejected the idea of buying or annexing Greenland, but their leaders said the proposed security deal could improve protection while preserving Greenland’s rights.
