Assam Land Rights Bill for Tea Workers
The Assam government has passed a new law to give land rights to tea workers.
This is a big deal because these workers have been living in company quarters for a long time without owning any land.
The government says it will give land titles to 3 lakh families and help them build houses.
However, some people in the government who disagree say there might not be enough land for everyone, and they want the government to include other communities too.
The government sees this as a big win, but others think it's just for political reasons.
Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi criticized the government for waiting a decade to introduce the bill and questioned its practicality and intent.
He also highlighted the decline of the tea sector and the lack of basic services in tea gardens.
Assam Assembly passes the Assam Fixation of Ceiling on Land Holding (Amendment) Bill, 2025, granting land rights to 3 lakh tea garden families.
Land cannot be sold for 20 years; after 20 years, it can only be sold to another worker.
Government plans to support house construction for beneficiaries if re-elected.
Opposition parties raise concerns about land availability and demand inclusion of other communities in the initiative.
Congress criticizes the government for seeking political mileage from the move, highlighting past land distribution efforts by their party.
