Teachers’ Body Challenges Tamil Nadu Protest Circular Notice
A government officer named Cynthia Selvi received a notice about a circular sent to colleges.
The circular told officials to help stop students and young people from joining certain political protests.
Teachers said Cynthia was only passing along orders from senior officials.
Those orders followed a government Law and Order meeting held on July 28.
The Higher Education Department sent the instructions to education officials on August 14.
It later withdrew its circular on August 19 after people objected.
The University of Madras had also sent a similar instruction to its affiliated colleges.
Teachers said Cynthia was being unfairly blamed while other officials were not questioned.
Another education-rights group said withdrawing the circular did not fully solve concerns about academic freedom and campus democracy.
The Tamil Nadu Government College Teachers’ Association condemned an explanation notice issued to Joint Director Cynthia Selvi.
The notice concerned a directive intended to curb student and youth participation in political protests and agitations.
The association said Selvi merely forwarded instructions based on a July 28 Law and Order meeting chaired by the Chief Secretary.
The Higher Education Department withdrew its original circular on August 19 after controversy, according to the association.
Teachers and education-rights groups demanded that proceedings against Selvi be dropped and warned that withdrawal alone did not protect academic freedom.
