Meghalaya Leaders Back Review of Proposed Foreign Funding Bill

Meghalaya Leaders Back Review of Proposed Foreign Funding Bill

Meghalaya leaders are worried about proposed changes to rules for foreign donations.

These rules are called the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act, or FCRA.

Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said the concerns affect all organisations that receive money from other countries.

He supported sending the proposed Bill to a parliamentary committee for closer study.

Meghalaya MP James PK Sangma was invited to join that committee.

Congress MP Saleng Sangma said he asked people from several countries to raise the issue with India’s government.

Church and community leaders fear that stricter rules could hurt schools, hospitals, colleges and welfare programmes.

Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma said Meghalaya is working with the Centre while trying to protect genuine public-welfare organisations.
