Witnesses Say China Targets U.S. AI Infrastructure Debate

A congressional panel heard claims that China is trying to influence how Americans think about AI data centers.

A witness said fake online accounts and Chinese state media shared messages about electricity prices, power grids and environmental costs.

He also said some U.S.-based nonprofit groups supported similar arguments.

The witness connected these campaigns to delays or cancellations of proposed data-center projects.

He estimated that about $23.6 billion in possible investment was affected.

However, he said many Americans have real concerns that are not caused by foreign governments.

These concerns include higher electricity use, water consumption and changes to land.

One lawmaker said the goal was to reveal hidden influence without limiting free speech.

Another lawmaker said Congress should also examine U.S. government policies and President Donald Trump’s foreign business relationships.
