PSU Discoms Clear Dues Faster Than Private Utilities
Public sector electricity companies in India take less time to pay their bills to suppliers like power plants compared to private companies.
Even though public companies are in worse financial shape, they are quicker at paying their dues.
Private companies, on the other hand, take longer to pay but do better in other areas like collecting money from customers and reducing losses.
Public companies have big losses and owe a lot of money, which is a concern for the country's power sector.
The government is working on new policies to help these companies.
Public sector discoms take 112 days to clear dues, slightly better than the all-India average of 113 days.
Private sector discoms take 133 days to clear dues, longer than public sector discoms.
Public sector discoms face higher financial stress with accumulated losses of Rs 6.77 lakh crore and borrowings of Rs 7.11 lakh crore.
Private sector discoms outperform public sector discoms in revenue collection, cost recovery, and reducing losses.
The draft National Electricity Policy 2026 acknowledges these challenges and proposes measures to address them.
