India Amends Forest Rules for Strategic Minerals, Project Approvals
The Indian government has changed its forest rules.
These new rules create a special category for important minerals.
They also allow for certain projects that are very important to start work before they get final approval.
For instance, projects related to defense or national security can now submit applications offline.
Approvals will now last longer, and there are new rules about planting trees to compensate for cutting down forests.
If someone breaks the rules, forest officers can file a complaint, and the government is set to keep a closer eye on whether rules are being followed.
The government amended the Van (Sanrakshan Evam Samvardhan) Rules, 2023.
A new category for 'critical and strategic minerals' has been created.
Offline applications are now allowed for defense and strategic projects.
Certain projects can begin work after Stage-I approval, before Stage-II.
Compensatory afforestation and framework for dealing with offences are introduced.
