Indian Tax Revenue Trends in 2025
In the first eight months of 2025, the Indian government collected less money from customs duties compared to the previous year.
Customs collections dropped by 7.3%, and the growth in CGST (a type of tax) was also lower than expected.
However, the government collected more money from excise duties on things like fuel, which increased by 9.25%.
Experts say this shows that the government needs to focus on keeping the economy strong and making good tax policies to keep revenue stable.
Customs duty collections declined by 7.3% in April–November 2025 compared to the same period in 2024.
CGST collections grew by only 5.4%, below the budgeted 10.9% growth for FY26.
Union Excise Duties increased by 9.25%, outperforming the budgeted 3.9% growth for FY26.
The decline in customs collections is linked to tariff rationalization and reduced effective duty rates.
CGST growth has moderated due to GST rate rationalization under the GST 2.0 framework.
