Envoys and Heritage Enthusiasts Tour 118-Year-Old Jute Mill
A group of people, including envoys and heritage enthusiasts, toured a very old jute mill.
The mill, called Hukumchand Jute Mills, was built in 1907 and is located near the Hooghly River.
The visitors learned about how raw jute is processed and saw old machinery, including a 110-year-old water pump.
The tour was organized to highlight the history of jute, a natural fiber used to make fabrics.
Jute used to be a very important product, but now the industry is struggling because of cheaper synthetic materials.
However, jute is making a comeback as people look for biodegradable alternatives.
