TMC(M) Seeks Court Help Over Delayed Financial Reports
Imagine a political party, the Tamil Maanila Congress (M), that collects money from people.
They are supposed to tell the government where this money comes from, like a receipt.
They were late in giving these receipts for two years.
The government said 'no' to their request to forgive the delay.
Because of this, the government now wants the party to pay extra money, like a fine.
The party says they were late because they were confused and then because of a sickness.
They are now asking a court to help them.
TMC(M) is seeking a direction from the Madras High Court to condone the delay in filing monetary contribution reports.
The party delayed filing reports for financial years 2018-19 and 2019-20.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) rejected the party's request to excuse the delay.
The ECI stated that failure to submit reports on time results in the contribution becoming taxable.
The delay has led to the Income Tax department raising a demand for ₹66.76 lakh and ₹1.07 crore.
