China Confirms First Fatalities in South China Sea Clash

China has officers who sail the ocean to protect the country's sea areas.

Two of those officers, Yi Xinyu and Cheng Long, died while doing their job.

China recently honored them as heroes, which is a very special recognition.

They died on August 11, 2025.

The government did not say exactly how they died.

On that same day, two Chinese ships crashed into each other near a place called Scarborough Shoal.

This happened after one of the ships chased a ship from the Philippines.

The crash badly damaged the front of one Chinese ship.

China usually does not talk about officers who die in these situations, so this announcement is unusual.

It is the first time in over 20 years that China has confirmed deaths in the South China Sea.
