Kedarnath’s Growing Garbage Problem Raises Questions Over Collection
Kedarnath is dealing with a serious garbage problem.
Officials have shared two very different amounts of waste collected in May.
The District Magistrate said a refund program collected more than 50 tonnes.
The Nagar Panchayat reported only about 18 tonnes of total waste.
The reports do not explain why the numbers are so different.
One possibility is that visitors are creating more waste than before.
Another is that officials are now finding waste that earlier records missed.
Either way, the valley may be under increasing pressure from garbage.
A Right to Information reply does not explain why Kedarnath’s reported waste figures differ.
The district administration operated a Deposit Refund System this season, offering refunds when visitors returned waste.
The District Magistrate said the system had collected more than 50 tonnes in May.
Nagar Panchayat monthly data recorded about 18 tonnes of total waste by the end of May.
The discrepancy could indicate rising consumption or improved collection of waste previously missed.

Rising Consumption
