India Selectors Face Hardik, Pant and Rohit Calls
India’s cricket selectors are choosing teams to play the West Indies.
They must decide if Hardik Pandya is fit enough to bowl 10 overs and stay on the field for a whole one-day match.
Hardik is expected to return to competitive cricket on September 20.
Rishabh Pant might come back to India’s one-day team as a backup wicketkeeper.
KL Rahul is still expected to be the main wicketkeeper.
The selectors will also discuss Rohit Sharma’s future because he wants to play in the 2027 World Cup.
Some players are unavailable because of the Asian Games or injuries.
Other possible choices include Ravindra Jadeja, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Rajat Patidar and Mohammed Siraj.
India’s selectors will choose ODI and T20I squads for a three-ODI, five-T20I West Indies series.
Hardik Pandya’s readiness to bowl 10 overs and field for 50 overs will determine his ODI prospects.
Rishabh Pant could return as KL Rahul’s wicketkeeping backup, while Dhruv Jurel is another option.
Rohit Sharma’s place is under discussion after he expressed a desire to play in the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Ravindra Jadeja, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Rajat Patidar and Mohammed Siraj are among other selection possibilities.
- Who
- India’s Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee will choose the squads, with Hardik Pandya, Rishabh Pant and Rohit Sharma among the main talking points.
- What
- The selectors will pick India’s ODI and T20I squads for the home series against the West Indies.
- When
- The meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, September 15, 2026; the ODI series begins on September 27 and the T20I series on October 6.
- Where
- The selection meeting will be held in New Delhi, while the first ODI is scheduled for Thiruvananthapuram.
- Why
- The selectors must assess player fitness and form while replacing or covering for players unavailable because of Asian Games commitments or injuries.
Arguments For Selection
Arguments Against Selection
Hardik Pandya’s ODI return
Arguments For Selection
Pandya would address India’s shortage of seam-bowling all-rounders, especially with Nitish Kumar Reddy unavailable and Suryansh Shedge and Venkatesh Iyer injured.
Arguments Against Selection
He has limited time before the first ODI to show that he can bowl 10 overs and field continuously for 50 overs in an international match.
Rishabh Pant’s comeback
Arguments For Selection
Pant could receive another white-ball opportunity because Ishan Kishan will be in Japan for the Asian Games, while Pant remains a potential member of the 15-player squad.
Arguments Against Selection
His indifferent IPL form previously cost him a place in white-ball teams, and selectors could choose Dhruv Jurel instead and assign Pant to lead the Rest of India in the Irani Cup.
Ravindra Jadeja’s recall
Arguments For Selection
Jadeja would provide experience after Harsh Dubey’s injury and Axar Patel’s Asian Games commitment reduced the available left-arm spin options.
Arguments Against Selection
Selectors could prefer a less experienced alternative such as Manav Suthar rather than recall Jadeja, who was not selected for the ODI series in England.
Rohit Sharma’s World Cup plans
Arguments For Selection
Rohit’s recent century and BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia’s public praise support the case for continuing to consider him for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Arguments Against Selection
Questions about his future have continued despite those assurances, particularly after his 26 off 47 balls in the second ODI in Cardiff.
- Series format
- India will play three ODIs and five T20Is against the West Indies.
- Hardik Pandya
- He is scheduled to return to competitive cricket on September 20 and has been named in India A’s squad for a three-match One Day series against Australia A in Puducherry from October 6.
- Hardik’s fitness test
- Selectors must determine whether he can immediately bowl 10 overs and field for a full 50-over international match.
- Wicketkeeping
- KL Rahul is expected to remain the first-choice ODI wicketkeeper, with Rishabh Pant and Dhruv Jurel competing for the backup role.
- Rohit Sharma
- Rohit has expressed a desire to play in the 2027 ODI World Cup; BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia publicly praised his recent performances.
- Unavailable options
- Nitish Kumar Reddy and Axar Patel are committed to the Asian Games, while Suryansh Shedge, Venkatesh Iyer and Harsh Dubey are described as injured.
- Spin and pace choices
- Ravindra Jadeja could return because left-arm spin options are reduced, while Mohammed Siraj is expected to return after missing the previous ODI squad.
