South Korea Weighs Hormuz Role Amid U.S. Pressure

South Korea is deciding whether to help keep ships safe in the Strait of Hormuz.

The government says it is mainly thinking about safe travel, energy supplies and protecting South Korean citizens.

It says the decision is not primarily about pleasing the United States.

Possible help could include patrol planes, bomb-disposal teams and unmanned equipment.

South Korea has not decided whether to send any military assets.

Iran has warned that foreign military involvement could have serious consequences.

Some South Korean lawmakers strongly oppose sending personnel or equipment.

Other lawmakers say disagreement inside the government could worry the public.

South Korea is also considering international cooperation and humanitarian or rebuilding efforts.
