Monsoon likely to weaken in western, southern India: IMD

Monsoon likely to weaken in western, southern India: IMD

India gets most of its rain during a special season called the monsoon.

This rain fills rivers and helps farmers grow food.

Weather scientists at the India Meteorological Department say many parts of India will get less rain than usual in the next two weeks.

This includes the west, the middle, and the south of the country.

Only some eastern and northern states will still get normal rain.

Less rain is a big problem because farmers just planted crops like cotton, soybeans, corn, and beans.

These young plants have small roots, so they can easily be hurt if the ground dries out.

So far this season, India has already received 12 percent less rain than normal.

A weather pattern called El Nino is expected to make things drier and hotter in the coming weeks.
