Muslim Artisans Sustain Mathura’s Unique Janmashtami Craft Tradition

Mathura is preparing for the Janmashtami festival in 2026.

Janmashtami celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna.

Muslim artisans in the city make crowns, clothes and ornaments for Krishna idols.

They also create colourful tableaux and other decorations.

Much of this work is done carefully by hand.

Many families have passed the craft from parents to children.

Their work helps decorate temples, homes and festival areas.

Their participation is seen as an example of peaceful Hindu-Muslim cooperation in Mathura.
