Allahabad HC Upholds 25% Income Maintenance for Wives
The Allahabad High Court in India recently made a decision about how much money a husband should give his wife for support.
The court said that a wife can get up to 25% of her husband's income for maintenance.
In one case, a man named Suresh Chandra was told to pay his wife Rs 3,000 per month, which is much more than the Rs 500 he was paying before.
The man argued that he doesn't earn much, but the court said that even if he earns around Rs 18,000 per month, Rs 3,000 is not too much to pay.
The court also said that the wife doesn't have her own income, so the husband must support her.
The High Court agreed with the earlier decision and did not change it.
Allahabad High Court ruled that a wife's maintenance can be up to 25% of the husband's income.
The court dismissed a petition challenging the enhancement of maintenance from Rs 500 to Rs 3,000 per month.
The husband, Suresh Chandra, argued that he is a labourer with limited income, but the court found the maintenance amount reasonable.
The court noted that the wife has no independent source of income, making her dependent on the husband for support.
The High Court cited Supreme Court rulings to support its decision, stating that maintenance up to 25% of the husband's income is acceptable.
