Supreme Court Dismisses CBI Coal Case Against Manmohan Singh
The Supreme Court of India decided to stop a criminal case that had been started against former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
The case was about a coal block that was given to a company owned by businessman Kumar Mangalam Birla.
The Central Bureau of Investigation had already said that Singh was not guilty, but a special judge had rejected that report.
The Supreme Court said the judge was wrong and accepted the report that cleared Singh.
Because Singh had died, the court said the case could be closed.
This means no more court work will be done on this matter.
Supreme Court set aside 2015 CBI criminal case against former PM Manmohan Singh.
Court accepted CBI closure report that cleared Singh, overturning earlier special judge's rejection.
Case stemmed from alleged illegal allocation of Talabira II coal block to Hindalco Industries, owned by Kumar Mangalam Birla.
Supreme Court ruled that Singh's death made the case infructuous, quashing summons and closing the matter.
Decision follows earlier Supreme Court 2014 ruling that declared all coal block allotments between 1993-2010 illegal.
