Ministry Urges States to Open Escrow Accounts for Crop Insurance
Imagine farmers planting crops, but sometimes bad weather or pests can ruin them.
The government has a plan called PMFBY to help farmers get some money back if this happens.
Farmers pay a small part of the cost, and the government and states pay the rest.
To make sure farmers get their money quickly when crops are lost, the government wants states to put their share of the money into a special bank account called an escrow account.
This way, the money is ready when it's needed.
Not all states have done this yet, so the government is reminding them to do it soon, especially before the winter planting season (rabi).
This helps make sure farmers are protected and can keep farming.
The Agriculture Ministry has urged states to open escrow accounts for crop insurance premiums.
Only 11 out of 24 states implementing PMFBY have opened the mandatory escrow accounts.
Escrow accounts are crucial for timely settlement of claims to farmers.
PMFBY covers crop losses from natural disasters, pests, and diseases, with farmers paying a fixed premium.
The ministry is also introducing technology for accurate crop yield assessment to speed up claim settlements.
