India's Steel Sector Faces Import Challenges
India is having some trouble with steel prices.
The country imports a lot of steel from places like China, Japan, and Korea, and these imports are quite cheap.
This makes it hard for Indian steel companies to sell their steel at good prices.
The Indian government has tried to help by putting a tax called a safeguard duty on imports, but this tax expired in November.
Now, there's a recommendation to bring it back, but it's not sure yet.
Even with this tax, India still imports more steel than it exports.
Experts think that Indian demand for steel will grow in the next few years, but the cheap imports might still cause problems.
They suggest that the government should increase taxes on imports to help Indian steel companies.
India remains a net importer of steel despite a 13% decrease in imports (Apr-Nov 2025).
Safeguard duty of 12% (tapering to 11% over 3 years) recommended but not yet implemented.
Cheap imports from China, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam are pressuring domestic steel prices.
Anti-dumping duty imposed on certain Chinese steel products for five years.
India's steel demand projected to grow 8-9% in FY26, but cheap imports remain a challenge.
