International Chess Day Celebrated Globally on July 20th
The UN decided to make July 20th International Chess Day, which is a day to celebrate the game of chess!
Chess is like a sport, a science, and an art all rolled into one.
The group in charge of chess around the world is called FIDE, and it started way back in 1924.
By July 2025, there were over 2,000 people with the highest chess title, called grandmasters, from many different countries.
FIDE has lots of member groups too.
The UN designated July 20th as International Chess Day.
FIDE was founded in 1924.
As of July 20, 2025, there were 2,101 grandmaster titles.
Grandmasters come from over 90 countries.
