AOL to Shut Down Dial-Up Internet Service Next Month
AOL, a very old internet company, is shutting down its dial-up internet service.
This service, which connected to the internet using phone lines, was popular in the 90s.
Remember the movie 'You've Got Mail'?
That's how many people got online back then.
AOL used to send out free trial discs to get people hooked.
Now, with faster internet like fiber optic available, not many people use dial-up anymore.
Even though the US had hundreds of thousands of users recently, the service is finally ending.
This means no more of the classic 'You've got mail!'
sound.
AOL, owned by Yahoo, will discontinue its dial-up Internet service on September 30.
The service gained popularity in the 1990s, and was featured in the 1998 film 'You've Got Mail'.
AOL's dial-up service offered speeds up to 56 kilobits per second.
The US census estimated 265,000 users were still using the service in 2019.
AOL had an India portal in 2007, but scaled back its operations by 2011.
