India to Keep Internet Free From Unlawful, Obscene Content

The government of India wants the internet in India to be safe and clean, without rude or illegal videos and posts.

A minister named L Murugan told the parliament, called the Lok Sabha, about this plan.

He said the government wants the internet to be open, safe and trusted, especially for women and children.

There are special rules, called the IT Rules, that tell big websites and social media apps to remove bad content.

The rules were recently changed to also stop fake videos made by computers, known as deepfakes.

If websites do not follow the rules, they can lose their special protection from the law.

The government also runs a website where people can report cybercrimes, even without telling their names.

It has given money to states to build cyber laboratories and train police officers.

More than 24,000 police officers and judges have been trained so far.

This helps keep people safe when they use the internet.
