Awarapan 2 eyes Rs 20 crore opening, leads Batwara 1947
Two big Bollywood movies open in India on the same day, August 14, just before Independence Day.
One is Awarapan 2, starring Emraan Hashmi and Disha Patani, a sequel to the 2007 film Awarapan that became a cult favourite.
The other is Batwara 1947, starring Sunny Deol, a drama set during India's Partition in 1947.
Even before the movies opened, Awarapan 2 sold many more advance tickets than Batwara 1947.
Because of that, experts think Awarapan 2 could earn around Rs 20 crore on its first day, more than first expected.
The writer of Awarapan 2 says the sequel had to be made because the story of the character Shivam Pandit was not finished.
One trade expert says Batwara 1947 will need strong word of mouth and older audiences to grow.
Early Day 1 estimates showed Awarapan 2 collecting Rs 0.46 crore net so far, with final numbers still awaited.
Both films will compete over the holiday weekend, and their opening-day results will show which one is winning.
Awarapan 2, starring Emraan Hashmi and Disha Patani, is projected to open around Rs 20 crore net on August 14, up from earlier estimates of Rs 12-15 crore.
Per Sacnilk, Awarapan 2 led Day 1 advance sales with Rs 4.08 crore gross from 1.31 lakh tickets across 7,011 shows (Rs 6.56 crore including block seats).
Batwara 1947, starring Sunny Deol and directed by Rajkumar Santoshi, recorded Rs 97.81 lakh from 35,221 tickets across 6,864 shows (Rs 2.91 crore including block seats).
Advance figures varied across reports: one update cited an 81% ticket-sales lead for Awarapan 2 (nearly 68,000 tickets vs around 37,600 for Batwara 1947), while another reported approximately 102,470 tickets sold.
Trade analyst Komal Nahta said Batwara 1947 must rely on word of mouth and older audiences to grow, while writer Bilal Siddiqui said Shivam Pandit's story 'wasn't done,' driving the sequel.

Batwara 1947 comeback
Independence Day box-office winner
Awarapan 2 dominant
Awarapan 2's strong advance bookings (Rs 4.08 crore vs Rs 97.81 lakh for Batwara 1947), the youth appeal of its trailer and songs, and nostalgia for the 2007 original make it likely to open around Rs 20 crore net and lead the weekend.
Batwara 1947 comeback
As trade analyst Komal Nahta noted, Batwara 1947 can still grow by relying heavily on word of mouth and the older audience, backed by Sunny Deol's mass appeal and its emotional Partition-era story.
