Nyepi is a special Hindu day in Bali when people stay quiet, avoid travel and prepare food beforehand.

The whole island becomes very still for about 24 hours.

Tourists are expected to follow these rules too.

A Swiss tourist named Luzian Andrin Zgraggen posted rude messages about Nyepi online.

He also went outside and filmed himself at an empty beach during the restrictions.

He said he was hungry, frustrated and did not understand the rules, and he apologized in court.

Local officials and the judge said his actions insulted Balinese religious traditions.

The court sentenced him to one year in prison.
