US and Australia Commit $580 Million for Pacific Islands

Australia and the United States said they will give Pacific island countries new financial support.

Australia’s package is worth A$600 million, reported as about $430 million.

It is meant to help stop illegal drug shipments.

The money will also support aerial surveillance and train police and border officials.

The United States will provide another $150 million.

Some of that money will help countries store more fuel and keep electricity systems stable.

The announcements were made at a regional meeting in Palau.

The meeting also included a disagreement because China opposed Taiwan taking part.
