UN Panel Accuses Israel of Systematic Torture of Palestinian Detainees
Imagine a group of judges, called the UN Committee Against Torture, who are like referees for countries.
They have referees from different countries who watch to make sure countries follow important rules about not hurting people, especially those who are captured.
Recently, these referees heard many stories about how people from Palestine have been badly hurt while they were being held by Israel.
The referees said it looked like this hurting was happening a lot, on purpose, and was like a common way of treating these people, not just a few bad accidents.
They heard about beatings, electric shocks, not giving enough food, and even threats of bad things happening to them.
A report from even earlier said secret arrests and torture might be happening.
However, the person representing Israel told the referees that these stories are not true and are like fake news.
Israel says they are a good country and follow the rules, even when things are hard because of groups like Hamas.
The referees said that even if one side does bad things, it doesn't mean the other side can also do bad things.
They also plan to look into bad things that Hamas might have done later.
UN experts accuse Israel of 'systematic and widespread' torture and mistreatment of Palestinian detainees, including children.
Allegations suggest abusive practices, such as severe beatings, electric shocks, starvation, and rape threats, have been used as a 'deliberate and widespread tool of state policy' since October 7, 2023.
A UN human rights office report from July 2024 also accused Israel of secret detentions and potential torture of Palestinians.
Israel's ambassador to the UN dismissed the allegations as 'disinformation'.
The UN Committee Against Torture, monitoring compliance with the Convention Against Torture, heard evidence from various sources, including UN bodies and NGOs.

Nature and Scale of Abuse
UN Panel's Allegations
UN experts cite numerous reports detailing 'systematic and widespread' torture and mistreatment of Palestinian detainees, including children, with evidence suggesting it has become a 'deliberate and widespread tool of state policy' since October 7, 2023. Reported methods include severe beatings, electric shocks, stress positions, starvation, waterboarding, and sexual threats. The scale of alleged abuse has reached 'unprecedented levels'.
Israel's Response
Israel dismisses these allegations as 'disinformation', particularly from UN bodies like the Commission of Inquiry and the UN's special rapporteur on Palestinian rights. Israel asserts it is 'committed to upholding its obligations in line with our moral values and principles'.
Detainee Treatment
UN Panel's Allegations
Evidence presented suggests many detained and subsequently released Palestinians have been subjected to torture and ill-treatment, with a UN human rights office report from July 2024 also accusing Israel of detaining Palestinians in secret and subjecting some to treatment that may amount to torture.
Israel's Response
Israel maintains its commitment to its obligations and moral values, implying that any actions taken are within these bounds and not reflective of widespread abuse as alleged by the UN panel.
