Meta Fined $567M in Landmark Child Safety Ruling

Meta Fined $567M in Landmark Child Safety Ruling

A judge in New Mexico told a big company called Meta that it must pay a lot of money.

Meta owns apps like Instagram and Facebook that many kids use.

The judge said the apps were not safe enough for children.

He said Meta is like a factory, but instead of dirty smoke, its 'pollution' is harm to children.

He ordered Meta to pay $567 million, on top of $375 million it already owed, making the total $942 million.

Most of the money will help kids who were hurt get treatment and support.

Some will teach teachers and doctors how to keep children safe online.

The judge also made new rules, like stopping adults from messaging kids and limiting teen usage to 90 hours a month.

Meta says it disagrees and will ask another court to review the decision.

Other countries are also watching this case closely as they think about how to protect children on social media.
