H1N1 and Typhoid Co-Infection Can Complicate Diagnosis and Recovery

H1N1 and Typhoid Co-Infection Can Complicate Diagnosis and Recovery

H1N1, also called swine flu, is a virus that mainly affects the breathing system.

Typhoid is a bacterial illness usually linked to unsafe food or water.

A person can rarely have both infections at the same time.

The two illnesses can cause similar symptoms, such as fever, tiredness and body aches.

This can make it hard for doctors to know which infection is present.

H1N1 can cause breathing problems, while typhoid can cause stomach problems and dehydration.

Doctors may need tests to identify the infections.

Typhoid may need antibiotics, and some H1N1 patients may need antiviral medicine.

People with severe symptoms should seek medical care and should not take antibiotics without advice.
