Myanmar rebuffs ASEAN envoy, refuses unconditional Suu Kyi release

Myanmar is a country in Southeast Asia.

In early 2021, the army took power and removed the elected leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, who had won a big peace prize.

This caused fighting in the country, and the conflict has hurt very many people.

ASEAN, a club of 11 countries in the region, made a peace plan and chose a special helper, called an envoy, to talk to Myanmar.

But Myanmar's leaders say they do not need the envoy anymore, because they held an election that their own party won.

ASEAN wants Myanmar to let Suu Kyi go free right away.

Myanmar's leaders say they have made her punishment lighter but will only set her free according to their own laws.

The leaders also held a meeting with Thailand's foreign minister in Bangkok last week.

Right now, the two sides do not agree, and they are still talking about what should happen next.
