Philippine Senate Lowers Conviction Threshold in Duterte Impeachment Trial

The Philippine Senate is acting as a court in Vice President Sara Duterte’s impeachment trial.

Senators decided that only judges who can take part in the trial should count when calculating the votes needed for conviction.

This lowered the number of votes needed from 16 to 14.

Thirteen lawmakers supported the change, while one opposed it and six did not take part.

Four senator-judges have been unable to participate because of legal actions involving some of them.

Duterte is accused of misusing public money, having unexplained wealth and threatening President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and others.

She denies wrongdoing and says she will take part in the trial carefully.

If convicted, she could be barred from holding political office and would not be able to run for president in 2028.
