DMK Declares Karnataka Lacks Authority Over Cauvery Water
A senior leader from the DMK party, T K S Elangovan, said that the state of Karnataka does not have the power to decide how much water from the Cauvery river goes to Tamil Nadu.
He said only a special authority can make those decisions.
Karnataka had a plan to build a dam called Mekedatu, but the plan was sent back because it didn’t follow court rules.
Elangovan said the DMK thinks a meeting between the two states’ leaders is just for show.
He wants people to go to the tribunal to stop the dam instead of talking to the Karnataka chief minister.
The statement was made in Chennai on July 30, 2024.
DMK leader T K S Elangovan says Karnataka has no authority over the Cauvery river.
Only the Cauvery Water Management Authority can decide water sharing.
Karnataka's Mekedatu dam project report was returned for non‑compliance with tribunal award and Supreme Court rulings.
DMK dismisses proposed meeting between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka chief ministers as a "show off".
