Government Begins Retail Onion Sales At ₹35 Per Kg
The government has started selling onions for ₹35 per kilogram.
It is using onions saved in a special government buffer stock.
The plan is meant to help keep prices from rising too much, especially when festive demand increases.
Consumer Affairs Secretary Nidhi Khare said India does not have an onion shortage.
NCCF and NAFED will sell the onions through stores and mobile vans.
Kendriya Bhandar outlets will also take part in the initial programme.
NAFED mobile vans have begun selling onions at 40 places in Delhi.
The onions may later be sold through online platforms, large retail stores and possibly PDS shops.
Officials say the retail network will grow so more people can buy affordable onions.
The Centre began selling onions from its buffer stock at ₹35 per kg.
NCCF and NAFED mobile vans and stores will distribute the onions.
Kendriya Bhandar outlets are also included in the initial retail network.
Nidhi Khare said India has sufficient onion production and availability.
Sales began in Delhi, with mobile vans operating at 40 locations and further expansion planned.
