India Notifies IST Rules As Common Official Time Reference

India Notifies IST Rules As Common Official Time Reference

India has announced rules to make Indian Standard Time the main official clock across the country.

The rules will apply to legal, government, business and other official activities.

They were notified on August 27, 2026, but will begin 180 days after being published in the Official Gazette.

This waiting period gives organisations time to adjust their computers and other systems.

Banks, trains, airports, phone networks and power systems all need accurate time to work together.

Using one time reference could reduce differences between timestamps.

The government also wants important systems to use Indian timing sources, including NavIC.

A trial network in Bengaluru showed how IST could be securely shared with different sectors.
