Bihar Approves Son River Water-Sharing Agreement with Jharkhand
The Bihar Cabinet has approved a plan to share the water of the Son River with Jharkhand.
This agreement was made after a meeting where both states discussed how to divide the water.
Originally, undivided Bihar was given a certain amount of water, but after Bihar split, Jharkhand wanted its share.
Now, Bihar will get 5.75 MAF and Jharkhand will get 2.00 MAF.
This decision will help build a big project called the Indrapuri Reservoir, which will provide water for farming in many districts.
The next step is for both states to work together to make this plan happen quickly.
The Cabinet also approved many other projects, including setting up factories, building a logistics park, and installing CCTV cameras in jails.
Bihar Cabinet approved the Son River water-sharing agreement with Jharkhand, finalized at the 27th Eastern Zonal Council meeting in Ranchi on July 10, 2025.
Bihar will receive 5.75 MAF and Jharkhand 2.00 MAF out of the original 7.75 MAF allocated to undivided Bihar in 1973.
The agreement aims to facilitate the implementation of the Indrapuri Reservoir Project for sustainable irrigation across eight districts.
The Cabinet approved 43 agenda items, including three private investment proposals worth over ₹400 crore and various infrastructure projects.
Both states' departments will now work on the early execution of the agreement and the Indrapuri Reservoir Project.
