Court Denies Bail to Tasleem Ahmed, Cites Accused's Role in Trial Delay
The Delhi High Court refused to release Tasleem Ahmed on bail.
Ahmed's lawyers said he has been in jail for five years without his trial starting, violating his rights.
However, the court pointed out that Ahmed and other accused have been delaying the trial themselves.
The court decided that because the delays were caused by the accused, and due to the serious nature of the charges, bail could not be granted.
The court highlighted that the charges are serious as they are linked to terrorism and a conspiracy against the State.
Delhi High Court rejected bail for Tasleem Ahmed in the 2020 Delhi riots case.
Ahmed argued for bail citing lengthy pre-trial detention.
The Court found the delays were primarily due to the actions of co-accused, not the prosecution.
The court emphasized the UAPA's restrictions on bail.
The court stated that speedy trials are important, but cannot be abused by those who delay proceedings.
