June Core Sector Growth Hits 5% with Iron Ore
The Indian government released new data showing that the core sector grew by 5% in June 2026.
This is the highest growth in five months.
The big reason for this growth is the addition of iron ore to the list of core sectors.
Iron ore production went up by a huge 43.9%.
Other sectors like electricity, steel, and cement also saw good growth.
However, some sectors like crude oil, natural gas, and fertilizers saw a decrease in production.
The government has been updating many of its data series to give a more accurate picture of the economy.
The Index of Core Industries (ICI) grew by 5% in June 2026, the highest in five months.
Iron ore, added as the ninth sector, saw a 43.9% increase in production, driving overall growth.
The new data series uses 2022-23 as the base year, leading to revisions in past growth figures.
Electricity generation rose by 9.8%, steel output by 4.6%, and cement production by 9.8%.
Petroleum-related sectors saw declines, with crude oil down 4.2%, natural gas down 7.4%, and refinery products down 4.7%.
