Janmashtami 2026: The Story Behind Chhappan Bhog’s 56 Foods

A story says that Krishna protected the people of Vrindavan from heavy rain.

He lifted Govardhan Hill and held it up like an umbrella for seven days.

During those seven days, Krishna did not eat any meals.

People believed that he usually ate eight times each day.

So, they calculated that he had missed 56 meals.

After the rain stopped, the villagers prepared 56 dishes for him.

This offering is called Chhappan Bhog.

People recreate it during Janmashtami to show their gratitude and devotion.
