Forest Fire Management Added to MGNREGA Work
The Indian government is expanding the work available through a program called MGNREGA, which provides jobs to people in rural areas.
Now, they can also work on preventing and managing forest fires.
This includes building fences and patrolling areas.
This change was made after some states were already using MGNREGA funds for this purpose.
A committee also suggested ways to ensure workers are not unfairly removed from the program and that completed projects should become permanent where necessary to avoid repeated work and save resources.
Forest fire management added as a new job category under MGNREGA.
The Rural Development Ministry issued a notification to include it.
Gujarat and other states were already using MGNREGA funds for forest fire management.
Forest fire control activities include boundary walls, fencing, and joint patrolling.
The Standing Committee on Rural Development asked for manual verification and corrections to prevent worker exclusion.
